Biosimilars 101: How “similar” are they?

Matt Marston completed his post graduate residency training at Eastern Maine Medical Center where he has been practicing in oncology as a pharmacy specialist at Eastern Maine Medical Center for the past 5 years.  He has been an active participant in clinical research in both the oncology and palliative care settings and has overseen formulary management and quality improvement initiatives for oncology drugs across Eastern Maine Healthcare System.  He is a recent recipient of a NNECOS Research Grant for a study evaluating the impact of pharmacist counseling and intervention on aiding oncology patients in smoking cessation.  Recently he has moved to oversee the expansion of the healthcare system’s specialty pharmacy program through Miller Drug, which has launched a multidisciplinary team overseeing oral medication management for the system’s oncology patients.  He currently serves on the NNECOS board of directors and NAHPAC.






 
Janet R. Ely, MSN, FNP, AOCNP, APCHN

Janet Ely is a family nurse practitioner at the University of Vermont Cancer Center in hematology-oncology and palliative care. She is responsible for comprehensive patient care including assessment, diagnosis, treatment of cancer patients in the setting of solid and liquid tumor malignancies. Janet directs a palliative care clinic in oncology to provide follow-up care and support for patients both on and off disease-directed treatment, including psycho-social support, counselling, education, and end-of-life care for hematology oncology patients facing terminal illness. Janet received her BSN from the University of Vermont, her MSN, FNP from George Washington University, and trained in the Harvard Medical School Program in Palliative Care Education and Practice.


 
Diane Koeller, MS, MPH, LGC

Diane Koeller is a clinical cancer genetic counselor at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. She is a graduate of University of Michigan’s dual degree graduate program in genetic counseling and public health. She sees patients for a wide variety of hereditary cancer predisposition syndromes at DFCI’s main campus in Boston and satellite location in Londonderry, New Hampshire. She also provides telegenetic services to Concord Hospital. She specializes in hereditary paraganglioma/pheochromocytoma syndrome, hereditary lung cancer, and transgender cancer care.

Jennifer May, RD, CD has been a registered dietitian at the University of Vermont Cancer Center for the past 11 years. She provides nutrition counseling to oncology patients and offers lectures on various cancer and cancer prevention topics. Jennifer received her Bachelor's of Science in Dietetics/Nutrition & Food Sciences at the University of Vermont and completed her dietetic internship at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Nicole Messier, RN, BSN, OCN, ONN-CG is the Clinical Program Coordinator/Nurse Navigator for the Upper and Lower Gastrointestinal (GI) and Genitourinary (GU) Multidisciplinary Care Cancer Clinics at The University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, VT.

Nicole graduated from the University of Vermont in 1998 with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing and since then has worked as an oncology nurse at The University of Vermont Medical Center in a variety of roles, including staff nurse on the in-patient oncology unit and as a primary nurse in the Department of Surgical Oncology. She has been in her current role as the Clinical Program Coordinator/Nurse Navigator of the GI Multidisciplinary Care Cancer Clinic since 2007 and for the GU Multidisciplinary Care Cancer Clinic since 2012. Nicole obtained certification as an Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) in 2015 and as an Oncology Nurse Navigator-Certified Generalist (ONN-CG) in 2016.

She has previously served as a Leadership Council member of the Academy of Oncology Nurse Navigators (AONN) and participated on the AONN+ Evidence Into Practice Standardized Navigation Metrics Project Team. Nicole currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Northern New England Clinical Oncology Society (NNECOS) and serves as co-chair for the Nursing & Allied Health Professional Advisory Committee (NAHPAC) of NNECOS.

In addition to speaking at national conferences, Nicole has contributed to the Cancer Site-Specific Navigation chapter in the Oncology Nursing Society's 2014 publication, Oncology Nurse Navigation: Delivering Patient-Centered Care Across the Continuum Oncology, as well as a contributor to the companion publication by ONS, Oncology Nurse Navigation Case Studies, in 2017. Nicole was a nominee for Cure Magazine’s 2013 Extraordinary Healers Award for Oncology Nursing.

 
Amanda Schwartz, MPS

ASCO Update

Amanda Schwartz, MPS  is Director of Congressional Affairs at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). In this role, she functions as ASCO’s primary lobbyist on issues impacting cancer care and research and develops grassroots messaging. Prior to coming to ASCO, Amanda’s work included positions on political campaigns, at the Virginia General Assembly, and for the American Heart Association (AHA). During her time at the Heart Association, she worked on the passage of Virginia’s smoke-free law which took effect in December of 2009.  Amanda holds a Masters in Legislative Affairs from the George Washington University and a BA from Wake Forest University in Political Science.

Laura J. Hackett, PharmD, BCOP, completed her Post Graduate Pharmacy Residency in Hematology/Oncology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in 2014. Laura earned her Board Certification in Oncology Pharmacy in 2016. She currently works as a Clinical Pharmacist in Hematology/Oncology in both the inpatient and ambulatory care settings at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH.


 

Julie Bushey, MSN, RN, OCN, CCRP

Abstract: Retrospective QI study of antiestrogen adherence in women with estrogen receptor positive breast cancer

Julie has been an oncology nurse for over 30 years, with 20 of those in the conduct of  oncology clinical trials. She is well-versed in human subject research protection, medical ethics, and federal regulations governing research conduct.  She developed the clinical trials program at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, MA and served as research nurse coordinator there from 1995 to 2013.

Julie holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Northeastern University and a master’s in nursing from Walden University.  She completed her master’s practicum in the Oncology Clinical Trials Office at Boston Medical Center.  She is a certified clinical research professional (CCRP) through the Society of Clinical Research Associates, and a Certified Oncology Nurse (OCN). She is the co-author of “Aprepitant as salvage chemotherapy in breast cancer patients receiving doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide”, and “Prospective evaluation of the incidence of delayed nausea and vomiting in patients with colorectal cancer receiving oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy” both published in  Supportive Care in Cancer, and most recently “Intraoperative radiation therapy as part of planned monotherapy for early-stage breast cancer” published December 2017 in Journal of Radiation Oncology.

Julie currently works as the lead clinical research nurse with the Center for Cancer Care at Exeter Hospital in Exeter, NH.

Timothy M. Millington is assistant professor of surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, having completed his internship and residency at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a visiting thoracic surgery fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
