Cancer Community Support


Developed in response to the global pandemic, and adopted as an ongoing program in 2023, the NNECOS Board of Directors, through the NNECOS Philanthropy Task Force, is pleased to offer two emergency need programs designed to bring help to patients with cancer who are facing extra need during their active treatment.

Purpose: To support the emergency needs of patients with cancer in Northern New England (Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont) facing financial toxicity, food insecurity, etc.

Criteria:

  • Grant funds are directed to a non-profit organization, not an individual.

  • Submitting organizations must be a 501(c)3 and have the infrastructure in place to provide much-needed emergency assistance to patients.
  • Recipients must be hematology/oncology patients under active treatment or receiving palliative care services as they approach hospice (not intended for long-term survivors who are not in active treatment).
  • Funds shall NOT apply to any per-patient annual assistance cap.
  • The intent is for this grant to help as many patients as possible, with an average award target of $375, and a minimum of six patients helped per grant.
  • Reporting requirements apply.

Evaluation: Rubric

Limits:

  • Efforts will be made to distribute grant funds across northern New England
  • Organizations are eligible to apply once annually.*
    • *If funds remain in the 4th quarter, past recipients will be invited to reapply.
    • Pilot program grant recipients are eligible to apply upon program launch.

Reporting:

A report providing an accounting of the utilization of funds is due no later than 60 days after the grant award is made, with subsequent reporting each 30 days for remaining funds. The inclusion of vignettes/stories that could be shared with the NNECOS community is strongly encouraged.

  • Documented accountability procedures/protocols

Process:
  • NNECOS purchase directly
  • NNECOS provides to clinic with a note about gift from NNECOS
  • Clinic champion tracks and is accountable to NNECOS via reporting


Reporting:

NNECOS is pleased to announce the awarding of a $3,000 matching grant to the UVM Medical Center Radiation Oncology Patient Fund. An innovative application of a NNECOS Cancer Community Support Emergency Need Grant, NNECOS matched the first $3,000 raised during the UVM Medical Center Radiation Oncology staff holiday fundraiser in support of their patient fund, doubling the impact of their efforts to reduce barriers to patients' care.
